Our founder Jesse Baker, a local farm boy who always dreamed of becoming an undertaker and casket maker, launched his dream in a tenant farm house on his family’s farm in Kingsboro, NC in 1937. In the early 1940’s he met his future wife Martha Matthewson, a school teacher from Princeville, NC. In 1944 they married and she resigned her teaching position to become her husband’s partner in the business. The couple had two children, Attorney Jesse M. Baker and Marsha Baker Coles. Since Martha Matthewson Baker death in 2007, The funeral home has been managed by her Daughter Marsha Baker Coles & Husband, The Rev Dr. Clifford C. Coles Sr; which they serves as Second Generation of the funeral home.
Working together the couple built a very successful funeral business and the Baker Casket Company, employing more than 10 people for many years. After Jesse’s untimely death in December of 1960, Martha continued the Baker Funeral Home and Casket Company alone. Five years later she closed the casket company and focused her energy solely on operating the Baker Funeral Home. In spite of the many “nay sayers” predicting failure following her husband’s death the business thrived.
